Year 1

5-6 year olds

Welcome to Key Stage 1 and our Year 1 classes

Year 1 this term will be learning all about The Great Fire of London. We will explore how it started, why it spread so fast, what damage it caused and how it was controlled. We will also compare 1666 to now, focussing on how houses and firefighting equipment have changed. This will all lead to our Great Fire of London finale, where we will dress up like Tudor children, experience the trades and hobbies children in 1666 were involved in and might even get to see some burning houses being extinguished!

We are focussing on our phonics knowledge throughout all our learning in readiness for our Phonics Screening in June where we have to decode 40 ‘real’ and ‘alien’ words. We have been practising putting sound buttons on our words, identifying digraphs (two letters that make one sound) and trigraphs (three letters that make one sound) and blending them together.

As we have become quite secure in counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, we are now going to begin basic multiplication and division, using methods such as numicon, arrays, sharing and grouping.

Please make sure you are reading at least 3 times per week, practising your spellings and are making the most of the Mathletics and Bug Club websites!

Please make sure you practise spelling your tricky and high frequency words and reading every night if you can - our reading beads are adding up!
