Year 2

6-7 year olds

Welcome to Key Stage 1 and our Year 2 classes.

Welcome to Year 2!

We hope you had a lovely summer holiday. This term, our topic is ‘Extreme Exploration’. We will be learning all about famous explorers:  Christopher Columbus, Robert Scott and Neil Armstrong.  To bring our learning to life, we will looking at different forms of transport and how they have developed over time.  The children will then choose, design and make a form of transport for their own expedition!

In Literacy, we will base our learning on the book: ‘Around the World in 80 days’ and your children will use actions to become familiar with the text. We will be introducing the children to a wide range of new vocabulary and teaching them to use correct punctuation.  We are really encouraging the children to include a range of conjunctions, interesting sentence openers and adjectives to add description.

In Numeracy, we are focusing on number, we will teach the children about place value and continue to master the use of ‘tens and ones’ in a 2-digit number [23 = 2 tens and 3 ones].  Once they have mastered this, we will then teach them to add and subtract using this method. We will then reinforce their number bonds to 20 and introduce children to counting on or back from a given number.  We will also be exploring 2d and 3d shapes and learn about measurements and using a ruler.

In Science, the children will be learning all about materials, recognising what objects are made of and using scientific vocabulary to describe their properties.  We will use expedition vehicles as a stimulus to focus on the materials used for different environments.

Please continue to read with your child every night. It gives the children a lot of confidence and boosts their skills. Please encourage the children to write their own comments in their Reading Diaries.  We have given your child a log-in for Mathletics and Bug Club so that they can continue their learning journey at home.
