Science is a subject that stimulates children’s curiosity about the world around them. It allows children of all ages to interact with first hand experiences, which are vital in developing their knowledge and understanding of science and its effects on the world.
At St Michael’s Church School, we provide a curriculum that supports and challenges every child whatever their starting point in Science. We aim to encourage children to become inquisitive, independent learners who are able to use their scientific knowledge, making systematic, precise observations and measurements whilst reflecting on, and evaluating their results.
Science is sometimes taught as part of a much wider topic so that it can be seen to be applicable in a wider context. However there are many times when science will be taught on its own, because this is the best way for your child.
The National Curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science inquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future We ensure a thorough coverage of every unit of work within the National Curriculum, at both key stage 1 and 2, with a focus on enquiry, varied investigation, questioning and subsequent explanation of scientific ideas.
Teachers assess the children’s prior learning and then plan lessons that support, engage and develop their understanding throughout a topic.
