At St. Michael’s, we believe that all children should be inspired by music and that every pupil has the right to a high quality music education. We recognise that good quality music education contributes considerable musical and non-musical benefits to pupils and make sure that pupils from all backgrounds and all abilities are able to join in and experience music and music-making. We aim for children to develop a love of music, developing intrinsic musical skill, knowledge and understanding.
Lessons are planned across every year group to complement and enhance the topic based curriculum of the school.
What’s happening this term?
Year 2 have been performing songs and raps about the Great Fire of London and creating their own Fire soundscapes on untuned percussion. Now they are very busy learning and perfecting their songs for the upcoming Nativity.
Year 4 have been continuing to extend their abilities on the recorder. Extending their note range and improving their music reading skills. They have also been exploring music within the World War One topic: listening to and learning popular songs from the period; learning songs about the war from different viewpoints and devising rhythm patterns to accompany them; and working in groups to create and notate a Trench soundscape on percussion instruments.
Year 5 have been learning songs and moves to take part in the Young Voices 2020 concert at the O2 in January. There is a fantastic variety of songs; particular favourites are the Frightfest, Queen, and of course the Pop medley. The 24th January will be a night to remember as we sing and dance with thousands of other children, professional musicians, dancers and performers.
Noise Tuition are an external company who offer 1 to 1 music lessons during our school day. Last year Nathan from Noise Tuition came into our assembly to show us his amazing piano playing and to encourage more children to take advantage of the piano and guitar lessons they offer in school.
