British Science Week – Biscuit Dunking Investigation

Today, as part of British Science Week, we used the children’s natural curiosity about biscuits to explore which biscuit was best at keeping a mini creature dry. As a class, we revisited what makes a fair test and discussed the different variables we needed to keep the same to ensure our experiment was accurate.

The children examined six different types of biscuits and made their own hypotheses about which one would last the longest when dunked in water. Working in small groups, they each took on an important scientific role—water measurer, dunker, counter, timekeeper, and observer—to help keep the investigation fair and well organised.
There was lots of excitement as groups dunked their biscuits and carefully observed the changes over time. Curiosity grew as they compared their predictions with the actual results.
In the end, the children discovered that Rich Tea and Shortbread biscuits stayed intact for the full two minutes, while the Digestive, Chocolate Chip, and Ginger Nut biscuits broke apart much sooner. This led to fantastic discussions about biscuit structure and why some biscuits absorb water more quickly than others.

A brilliant afternoon of scientific thinking, teamwork, and very soggy biscuits!
