    INTENT

The intent of our English curriculum at St. Michael’s Church School is to deliver high-quality lessons that inspire all pupils to become literate, articulate, and creative communicators. We aim to develop excellent reading and writing skills that empower pupils to study all curriculum areas with confidence, while nurturing a love of literature and storytelling. Our vision for writing is to equip every child with the tools to express themselves clearly, effectively, and with flair, underpinned by strong oracy skills and regular exposure to high-quality texts that spark imagination and deepen understanding. Vocabulary is explicitly taught and embedded across all year groups, ensuring pupils have the language needed to write with precision and impact. Writing is always purposeful, with pupils understanding genre, audience, and intent, enabling informed choices about structure, tone, and style. Through a rich and interconnected curriculum, we provide opportunities to write meaningfully across subjects, fostering creativity, confidence, and passion. By embedding our core values of excellence and responsibility, and by closing gaps through targeted support, we ensure that every child, regardless of background or starting point, can develop into a thoughtful, skilled, and enthusiastic writer.
