INTENT
“The intent of our Design Technology curriculum is to deliver high-quality lessons that inspire all pupils to create their own products. We aim to provide opportunities for pupils to experiment with design ideas which will support their creativity and skill development. We want to provide opportunities to allow children to explore how things are created and study technological developments that have impacted on our world. This will help to embed our values including resilience and excellence.”
IMPLEMENTATION
Design Technology at St. Michael’s
At St. Michael's Church School, we want children to use their creativity and imaginations to design and make products which solve problems in a variety of contexts. Design and Technology is a subject which lends itself to being cross-curricular and we want children to be able to draw upon their broad subject knowledge in order to become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens who are able to take risks with their designs. Children will also understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook safely in our children’s kitchen.
IMPACT
Our Design and Technology Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and planned to demonstrate progression. We encourage all children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. Creative thinking inspires children to make positive changes to their quality of life. Design and Technology subject encourages children to become autonomous and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. It enables them to identify needs and opportunities and to respond by developing ideas and eventually making products and systems.
If children are on track with curriculum expectations, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. Outcomes in D&T evidenced in booklets and photographs show a broad and balanced Curriculum that develops imaginative thinking in children and to enable them to talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making. Our D&T curriculum links with other subjects which offers a way for pupils to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding and become motivated to learn through a series of interconnected topics.
Through the study of Design and Technology children combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as functions and industrial practices. This allows them to
reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its uses and its impacts.

Implementation
Within the curriculum subject of Design and Technology, we have compiled a Skills and Knowledge grid bespoke to our curriculum at St Michael’s.
